Once the prey has been trapped in the web, the web’s movement alerts the grass spider that they have captured something. This funnel web isn’t sticky like other spider webs, but they contain vertical strands of web that entangle their prey. Funnel webs are cave-like in shape and are designed to trap prey that may enter by accident. These species of spiders are known for their funnel weaving capabilities. Grass spiders are one of over a thousand species of the Agelenidae family about 100 of them can be found in North America. Look for dark-colored stripes on the sides of their body. They’re approximately 19 mm in length, have four pairs of eyes that are roughly the same size, and they have hind legs that are very distinctive. The Hobo Spider (Tegenaria agrestis) is a member of the genus of spiders known as funnel web spiders. Hobo spiders weave funnel-shaped webs that are not sticky, like most spider webs, but rather give them space to attack their prey upon entry. It’s easy to mistake the grass spider for another variety but look for the grass spider from spring through summer. ![]() They sometimes wander off and they even more around the burrows to find prey. ![]() However, compared to a wolf spider, a hobo spider has a smaller head and body. Wolf spiders are mostly found in burrows, small holes in the ground where they hide and wait for prey. Even if you haven’t recently seen a spider on your lawn, you’ve probably seen some small webs that are lying right on top of the grass or some nearby landscaping. The hobo spider looks like a wolf spider with its brownish color, blackish markings on the abdomen, and long straggly legs. There are three venomous spiders in the United States: the brown widow, the brown recluse, and the black widow.
